Word Scramble

The Word Scramble tool mixes up any text you give it. It's perfect for building spelling worksheets and classroom warm-ups, making party games and treasure hunts, creating puzzle content, or just having fun turning a sentence into glorious nonsense. Everything happens live in your browser as you type.

Choose from three scramble modes depending on how chaotic you want the result to be — keep words readable, shuffle their order, or blend everything into one random string.

How to use the Word Scramble tool

The tool works the instant you start typing — there is nothing to download and no account to create. Here is the full walkthrough:

  1. Type or paste your text into the left-hand box. A single word, a sentence, a whole paragraph, or a spelling list — anything works.
  2. Pick a scramble mode. Letters in words keeps every word where it is but jumbles the letters inside it; Word order keeps each word whole but shuffles the sequence; Full chaos strips the spaces and throws every letter into one random heap.
  3. Read the result on the right, which updates live as you type. Prefer to control it? Switch off "live scramble" and tap the Scramble button to roll a brand-new jumble whenever you like.
  4. Use the quick actions: Copy puts the scramble on your clipboard, Clear empties the box, and Restore original brings your untouched text back so you can compare.

Worked examples

Spelling practice (Letters in words)
Input: quick brown fox → Output: kicuq nborw xof.
The words stay in order, so learners can still see where each one belongs — perfect for "fix the spelling" worksheets.
Rebuild-the-sentence game (Word order)
Input: meet me at the park at noon → Output: noon the at me park at meet.
Hand it to a friend and see how fast they can restore the original sentence.
Hard puzzle (Full chaos)
Input: treasure hunt → Output: hrtnuaeetrsu.
Spaces disappear and every letter is randomised — a proper challenge for anagram fans and escape-room clues.
Secret-message fun
Scramble a birthday message letter-by-letter, print it, and let the family unscramble it word by word to reveal the surprise.

Fun ways to use it at home and at work

  • Family game night: scramble movie titles or song names and race to guess them.
  • Classroom warm-up: jumble the week's spelling words for a two-minute starter activity.
  • Road trips: scramble the name of your destination and let the kids solve it before you arrive.
  • Team icebreaker: scramble each colleague's first name and have the group match them up.
  • Party invites & treasure hunts: hide the next clue as a scramble.

Pro tips

  • For younger kids, use Letters in words and keep words short — three to five letters is the sweet spot.
  • Re-press Scramble for a fresh jumble every time; no two rolls are ever the same, so you can print several difficulty levels from one word list.
  • Two-letter words like "in" or "to" only have one other arrangement, so mix in longer words to keep puzzles tricky.
  • Made a scramble that's too hard? Solve it instantly by pasting it into the Word Descrambler.

Did you know?

Rearranging the letters of a word to make another word is called an anagram — "listen" and "silent" are a classic pair. If you want real words instead of random jumbles, the Anagram Solver is the tool for you.
